I want to put a sign in our yard that says, “Garage Sale, everything must go including the house.” I have grown so tired of clutter. I have been downsizing our things, but I don’t think I am mean enough. I am keeping too many things. I go back over what I put “keep” tags on and ask myself why I put it there. What value does this item bring us? I think we need a fresh start. However, fresh starts inherently cost money. You have to replace the necessities. It’s true that starting over helps you determine what a need really is, but when you are in debt so badly, you don’t want to spend a single extra dime. So, you keep things.
Maybe I should pretend as if we are moving into the trailer today. What would I take with us? Hmmm…Well, we need to clean, so a mop, vacuum, and one or two cleaning products. We need to eat, so a few dishes, some pots and pans, and silverware. Food to put in those. Clothing and shoes if we ever plan to leave the trailer. Soap, shampoo, and razors for the shower, and sheets and blankets for the bed. A few office supplies (pens, paper, envelopes a stapler and some tape) and two laptops. A few tools for my husband in case he needs to repair anything, and general RV related items. We also need towels, paper towels, and dish soap. A camera is not a need but I am a photographer so the camera (only one of them) comes. A book or two so we can read ourselves out of our hard copies, our sleep machines (ugh) an extension cord and prescription medicines. Hair brushes and belts and oh yeah, Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen. Headphones to be courteous to each other and cords. A printer and chargers and oh gosh coffee, and the french press! I am feeling cluttered already. Anything else you suggest we add? You can see my point…
Let’s not forget pets and their supplies. Do we need a toaster? We definitely need the air fryer. Will our trailer hold all these items? Am I overwhelmed? You bet. Right now we are living in 2165 square heated feet. I think that is my whole problem. My husband is unbothered by all this and thinks time will work it out. I am wondering if we will need different things when our tiny home is built? Who’s to say, but there is a lot we don’t need hanging around here. I guess that should go first, and then we will see what’s left. The extraordinary sentimental items will go to to a small storage space at first, then once our trailer is set up on our land later, we will have our own space. Just a few wall hangings for the new house, and a couple of ceramics. I am probably overthinking this, I want to be a minimalist without keeping too many things. I know each person’s level of minimalizing is unique to them but I don’t want to be a maximalist either.
The point of this whole blog post is a wrapped up in a quote from the movie, “When Harry Met Sally.” The original quote is this, “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life start as soon as possible!”
For us, it goes like this, “When you know what you want to do with the rest of your life, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
***Addendum…The photo below represents our former wall of stuff from our old house. It stayed packed for over a year. This was after everything was unpacked that we actually needed or wanted. It grew when we moved back here. You will be happy to know most of it is out of the house now.
